Welcome to Chess Arena — a whole new fantasy chess universe where champions with game-changing abilities clash on a massive chessboard. It's a 40-player real-time chess battle royale. Outplay enemies with classic chess tactics and game-changing ability kits. Master the chaos as the storm closes in to be the last King standing. The same pieces as classic chess, but they move in real-time rather than turn-based.

How to play

Select pieces and issue moves — they execute after a short cooldown rather than instantly. Use champion abilities strategically; they often turn a losing exchange into a win. Master tactical positioning and timing. Fork, check, and pin, but also dodge, bait, and weave. Attack and defend, but with multiple pieces at once. Checkmate the opposing king to win in 1v1 matches, or survive the storm in battle royale to be the last King.

Champions

8 champions each with 3 abilities (passive, basic, ultimate). Each plays as a chess champion with game-changing abilities — wreaking destruction, chaos, deception, or control on the battlefield. Ability depth multiplies with chess tactics to create an unreachable skill ceiling. A healer champion plays totally different from a destruction-focused one, and counter-pick dynamics matter.

Game modes

  • Battle Royale — 40 players, shrinking storm, last king alive wins
  • 1v1 Classic — traditional checkmate with real-time moves
  • Team modes — coordinate ability usage with allies
  • Surprise limited-time game modes — rotating events with unique rulesets

Customization and social

With hundreds of unique chess set skins, pets, emotes and more, there are endless ways to customize your look on the battlefield. Each champion has their own dedicated collection of original cosmetics and accessories. Rich social features: proximity chat, text chat, and emoting let you talk and banter mid-match. Your user profile shows rich game stats — win rate, favorite champions, best streaks, and more.

Tips

  • Save special abilities for pivotal moments, not opening moves
  • Cooldown management matters more than piece count — a champion off-cooldown is far more valuable
  • Block line-of-sight for ranged champions with pawns; a pawn wall is surprisingly strong
  • Real-time doesn't mean rush; deliberate moves still beat panic moves
  • Learn 2-3 champions well instead of flipping through all 8 at beginner level
